Tour Islands, Beaches and Neighborhoods with Lily
@deafjourney
Lily Yu, founder of Deaf Journey Media, explores the Fort Myers area through a unique and accessible lens. Staying at Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina, she immersed herself in the area’s natural beauty and rich history. Highlights include visiting the historic Edison & Ford Winter Estates and strolling the lush Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve. Lily also took in the views at the Sanibel Lighthouse and walked along the beach at Lovers Key State Park.
Lily’s favorite part of the trip was kayaking on the Caloosahatchee River. An interpreter from the local Sally J. Pimentel Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center joined them for this activity.
Whether you’re drawn in by dreamy Gulf Coast beaches, gentle waterways or cultural experiences, you can travel without bounds in Fort Myers. Learn more about how to plan an accessible vacation and check out Lily's curation of unique experiences below.

What stood out to you the most during your trip?
The Edison & Ford Winter Estates was fascinating to explore, with plenty of history about their inventions, and it was incredible to see where they once lived by touring their homes, including the living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchen. The property itself is vast and stunning!
What’s your favorite thing you ate or drank?
Pina Colada (non-alcoholic) and seafood (crabs, shrimps, and fish).
What’s your favorite thing you did during your visit?
Kayaking through the only mangrove forest in the U.S. was such a fun experience! Although we didn’t spot any manatees or dolphins, we still had a great time. The interpreter did an excellent job guiding us through the tour.
What tips do you have for visiting the destination?
Fort Myers boasts many excellent seafood waterfront restaurants! First Street is charming, and the Beacon Social Drinkery rooftop bar offers stunning views of the city.
What is your #1 can’t miss experience in Fort Myers?
I would definitely recommend kayaking through the mangroves and exploring the beaches!
