Matlacha (pronounced Mat-luh-SHAY) forms a bridge from the mainland to Pine Island, which, like Sanibel and Captiva islands, relies only on stop signs to control the flow of traffic. The most well-known of the Pine Island communities, Matlacha occupies its own small island dotted by colorful shops and art galleries, seafood markets, funky waterside restaurants and a community park that fronts Matlacha Pass, part of the Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail. This artist's paradise is possessed by a strong bohemian charm, and it’s easy to fall under its spell.
In this cool and colorful community, even the light poles are painted. Brightly splashed shops and galleries invite you to step in and explore on your own, or go with a local to learn more about this tiny island’s rich history and ecology. Art galleries now inhabit old fishing shacks and bungalows, while waterfront restaurants in this old fishing town serve mouthwatering cuisine made from the freshest ingredients. The waters surrounding the island are a hot spot for sports fishers and wildlife-spotting happens naturally while saltwater kayaking through the mangroves of Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve.
