What are the best activities in Fort Myers?

Will I need a car in Fort Myers?
While there are several car-free ways to explore, including water taxis, ferries and bicycles, a car (rented or rideshare) is beneficial for getting from point to point. From vibrant Fort Myers Beach and the canals of Cape Coral to more secluded neighborhoods like Buckingham, Lehigh Acres and Alva, each area has a distinctive personality that's worth exploring. Sanibel and Captiva islands are connected to Fort Myers by a three-mile bridge, and the whole of greater Fort Myers is over 1,200 square miles.
Do I need an international driver's license in Fort Myers?
No, you do not. You're able to use your own home country's license to rent and drive a car. However, it is recommended that you get a supplementary International Driving Permit (IDP), which is an official license translation that is helpful for car rental agencies and local law enforcement.
What kind of currency is used in Fort Myers?
U.S. dollars and major credit cards are preferred. Larger banks will provide foreign currency exchange, but you'll get a better exchange rate by withdrawing U.S. dollars from an ATM. Please note there is no currency exchange desk at Southwest Florida International Airport.
Is tipping expected?
In most U.S. restaurants, it’s customary to tip between 15%–20% of the pre-tax bill. Hotel staff and tour guides also typically receive small tips as a gesture of appreciation. While it’s not mandatory, it is widely expected.
Can I get a SIM card in Fort Myers?
Yes, you can easily buy a physical SIM card or activate an eSIM at local carrier stores, big-box retailers like Walmart, or electronics stores in Fort Myers. Prepaid options are also available.
Will I need an adapter?
The U.S. uses 110V–120V electricity, and plug types have flat parallel pins. Travelers from many parts of Europe, Asia and beyond will need a plug adapter — and possibly a voltage converter depending on the device.
How is the water quality in Fort Myers?
The Fort Myers area has tap water that is safe to drink. The water here is "hard," which means you may notice a mineral or chlorinated taste. How should I pack for my trip?
Southwest Florida’s tropical climate means lots of sunshine, but every season is different. Summers are warmer with higher humidity and brief afternoon rain showers, while winters are dry and mild. Light, breathable clothing, sun protection and comfortable shoes are essential. Bring along a light jacket for cooler indoor spaces.
