Workshop description:
Painting the Landscape with Fresh Eyes: A Simplified Approach to Painting in Plein Air. The idea: LESS is MORE. Join me as I show you how to reduce the visual clutter that so often is so overwhelming when painting from life! Together we will discover how to simplify the landscape by eliminating unnecessary information and instead focusing on the interlocking shapes of sunlight and shadow.

Through a series of art exercises, observations, discussion and demos, you will begin to see the outdoors in a different light. You will be able to go outside with your paints and instead of seeing chaos, you will start to see the elements of the landscape as simple interlocking shapes of color, light and shadow that you can paint.

While the demos will be done in acrylic, concepts apply across mediums. Other mediums such as pastel, watercolor and oils will work too.

No plein air painting experience is necessary but would be helpful. For students new to plein air an additional plein air material list can be discussed but just know the materials will be simple and will not require you to go out and buy a lot of new things. Basically you need an easel, possibly a folding chair, and a bag, crate or wagon to carry your painting supplies, preferably on wheels.

Treat the small paintings you do in this workshop as “studies”. The goal is not to create a masterpiece during the class. So relax and have fun!

Supply list:
Drawing Materials: When exploring the landscape’s values and shapes use a tool that makes a commitment. Broad tip marker, 2B-6B pencils, Sketch book or drawing paper. We will be doing sketches outside so if using drawing paper have a hard surface to work on and tape or clip paper to it.

Bring the painting supplies you normally use. Several small canvases or sheets of paper (depending on your preferred medium) Keep them small, 8×10, 9×12 or 11×14. Items should be compact and be able to be taken outside.

Day 2:
AM painting demo and plein air painting will be on a location near gallery (TBD),
Bring painting supplies, sketch book, and pencils/broad tip marker for doing Notan thumbnails.
