Behind the Art: Cesar Aguilera
Put yourself in the heart of the SWFL art scene and you’ll likely encounter the works of Cesar Aguilera. Originally from Quito, Ecuador, Aguilera’s artistic influence runs deep in the community – from colorful street murals to inspiring art exhibitions.
Aguilera cofounded Artsemble Underground with fellow artist Brian Weaver to bring art beyond the walls of traditional galleries and into the community. Bright murals splashed onto structures, multimedia assemblies and vibrant art events have now become mainstays throughout The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel.
You can be a part of this engaging community at the Artsemble Underground Gallery and Lounge in the Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers, where emerging artists from across Southwest Florida showcase their works. On the second Saturday of every month, check out Battle of the Arts where local creators compete to be the best while raising funds for local nonprofits.
Artsemble Underground has brought art into the outdoors with murals throughout the region. On your own art exploration, check out Aguilera and Weaver’s “Creation of Culture” mural, a massive Michelangelo-inspired work spray-painted on the wall of the Cape Coral Art Center. Other community beautification projects by the duo include an ode to ice cream on the exterior of Sidecar Treats, as well as colorful works on the walls of BackStreets Sports Bar, Big Storm Brewing and more.
As the curator at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in the historic Fort Myers River District, Aguilera’s impact on the community is undeniable. See his colorful creations alongside collections by other notable artists in the Grand Atrium, Capital Gallery and the venue’s new rooftop sculpture garden.
