4 Nature Education Experiences on Sanibel Island
For most visitors, a trip to Sanibel Island means a day spent in the sand, clearing the mind, soaking in the rays and enjoying the unparalleled serenity found on our shores. But for those who possess a thirst for knowledge, this peaceful stretch of sand and sun also houses a treasure trove of learning experiences as unique as the place in which they’re found. So, if you’re one of the knowledge seekers – here are four must-visit educational stops on Sanibel Island.
1. J.N. “Ding” Darling Nature Wildlife Refuge
In the 1940s, local political cartoonist and pioneer conservationist Jay Norwood Darling became an instrumental influence in the preservation of Sanibel Island. In 1945, he petitioned President Harry S. Truman to sign an executive order to create the Sanibel National Wildlife Refuge. More than two decades later, the refuge was renamed in honor of Pulitizer Prize-Winning environmentalist J.N. Darling. Today, this 6,400-acre preservation is a pristine safe haven for migratory species of birds and native Florida wildlife.
2. National Shell Museum
The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum is the most comprehensive, accredited museum devoted solely to shells and the mollusks that create them. Their world-renowned malacologist (shell scientist), two marine biologists and team of expert museum guides are eager to share their expansive shell knowledge.
The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, founded in 1968, (C.R.O.W) offers a rare opportunity to learn about one of the nation’s leading wildlife rehabilitation hospitals. The center teaches visitors how injured, sick and orphaned animals are admitted, diagnosed, treated and released back into the wild. You can learn all about their process, practices and history at their Visitor Education Center.
4. Sanibel Sea School
This seaside academy takes learning to the next level, offering hands-on experiences that foster an appreciation for marine ecosystems – animals, people, plants, land, ocean, and weather. The curriculum includes daily classes and comprehensive camps that allow visitors to touch, feel and interact with natural surroundings. Plus, their Ocean Discoveries for Grown Ups – including beach walks and lecture series – are great ways for mom and dad to experience marine life, too. Happy learning!
There can be more to vacation than sun, beach, and waves. Add some educational experiences to your itinerary to return from vacation even sharper than when you arrived. Happy learning!
